Founded in 1998, REVA Medical is dedicated to developing minimally invasive medical devices that leverage its proprietary biomaterial and stent technologies to improve the treatment of coronary artery disease. Guided by an executive management team and scientific advisors with extensive product development and clinical interventional cardiology experience, REVA’s initial focus is the development of a drug-eluting bioresorbable coronary scaffold to advance the treatment of cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death worldwide.

Cardiovascular Stent Market Potential

In 2010, approximately 3.4 million stents were implanted globally and coronary stent sales were approximately $5 billion globally. Metal stents remain in the heart permanently; however, it is now generally believed that a stent’s functional purpose is fully served in less than six months. Once approved, bioresorbable scaffolds may have the potential to significantly impact the future of cardiovascular care.

The Bioresorbable Scaffold

The ReZolve™ scaffold is designed to provide the same clinical benefits as conventional metal stents, with the advantage of dissolving in the body after restoring arterial health. REVA’s bioresorbable technology allows for a controlled and safe resorption rate. Once the scaffold is dissolved, the artery is able to move naturally, a result not attainable with permanent metal stents. In addition, early encapsulation of the ReZolve™ scaffold in the arterial tissue, coupled with the loss of scaffold structure over time, may reduce the incidence of late forming blood clots, or thrombosis, a rare but serious problem associated with drug-eluting metal stents currently on the market.
